4Paradigm is a Beijing based startup that is pioneering machine learning algorithms for several industries in China including insurance. Founded in 2015, the team behind 4Paradigm originally built Baidu’s keyword anticipation feature before joining the Innovation Works program.
At its core, 4Paradigm is a delicate balance of two components. The first is a data parsing software stack designed to parse petabytes of data from legacy industries such as manufacturing and insurers. The second is 4Paradigm’s proprietary machine learning algorithms or the ‘neural network’ that identifies discrepancies in data flows – for example, suspect claims.
China’s property insurers have long been plagued by fraudulent claims. In fact, fraud is the leading factor of property insurer unprofitability in China and 4Paradigm is addressing this by identifying fraudulent claims at PICC, China’s largest property insurer.
Unlike other claims solutions that store and analyse unstructured claims data, 4Paradigm’s approach not only identifies suspect claims but continuously improves the accuracy of this identification by parsing petabytes of claim data in order to continuously broaden its ability to highlight subtle fraud indicators.
4Paradigm founder and CEO Dai Wenyuan sees 4paradigms at “the forefront of the development of deep learning and relational learning theory. We provide industry-specific patented technologies for practical problems of machine learning, including model self-learning, data-free cleaning, complex model interpretation and man-machine coordination.”
Team
Shiwei Hu – CTO
Shiwei is CTO at 4Paradigm and leads the development of 4Paradigms AI having previously served as product manager for Baidu’s insurance aggregator (baidu.caifu). Shiwei graduated with a PhD in computer science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Weyuan Dai – Co-founder & CEO
Weyuan is recognized as an AI thought leader in China having graduated with a Masters in engineering with a speciality in artificial intelligence from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In addition to leading 4paradigm, Weyuan is a visiting scholar at Hong Kong University and previously worked with Baidu’s R&D lab.
Yang Qiang – Chief data scientist
Yang Qiang is 4paradigms chief data scientist and has published more than 400 papers on machine learning.
In addition to a strong team and technical depth, a distinguishing characteristic of 4Paradigm is its offline operation. Specifically, 4Paradigm believes that AI best practice is not the result of technical breakthroughs alone. Rather, it works closely with its clients’ data management, CRM and back office departments in order to ensure the quality of data delivered to 4paradigm.
Although 4Paradigm is targeting numerous industries, it’s helping to turn the tide against a specific challenge for China’s insurance industry; fraudulent claims. While 4Paradigm’s machine learning efforts have established it as one to watch in China’s AI space, its offline efforts are arguably more impressive, this offline effort ensures not only the quality of data, but also fosters a culture of understanding rather than fear of AI within 4Paradigm’s client base.
