The RPA Bible: Advanced Topics

Article Synopsis :

The trifecta of Automation, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a C-level strategic priority. Of those embracing these technologies, referred together as Robotic Process Automation (RPA), less than half report being satisfied with the results. Problems typically stem not from the RPA technologies themselves, but lack of rigor in selecting and implementing the right RPA tool.

The Digital Insurer reviews Symphony Ventures and HfS Research’s Report on The RPA Bible: Advanced Topics

What is your digital operations strategy? You need one.

“The RPA Bible: Advanced Topics. Your Practical & Technical Guide to Robotic Process Automation” from Symphony Ventures and HfS Research outlines an actionable set of eight elements required for successful RPA orchestration. The eight elements, with sub-points explored in the report, are as follows:

1. Architecture

  • Building complex automation requires layered design
  • Choosing the right delivery model for your project
  • Optimizing your virtual workforce with process automation

2. Usability

  • Why visual and interface design matter
  • How steep is the learning curve?
  • Selecting the right code structure for process design
  • How sustainable RPA design pays dividends long-term

3. Integration

  • How to mitigate database integration risks
  • Why screen scraping is essential to the RPA toolkit
  • The most common application integrations in RPA
  • Customizing RPA solutions through code integration

4. Exception Handling

  • Defending your RPA workforce from technical failure
  • How exception handling can save your automation from failure

5. Security

  • Three ways encryption can augment business automation
  • Why efficiency goes hand-in-hand with security
  • Keys to governance, compliance, and auditing

6. Configuration Features

  • Four configuration features aiding automation development

7. Deployment Features

  • Doing more with less: optimizing resource allocation
  • Why blindly piling work onto automation is a bad idea

8. Vendor Support & Documentation

  • Transformation begins with education
  • How to make the most out of your automation support resources

As consumer and enterprise digitization increases, RPA will undoubtedly be a major component in the future of work. Companies reaping the greatest rewards from RPA are those that view it as part of a holistic digital operations strategy, not just a ‘one off’ for workforce replacement or cost reduction.

Other tools in the ‘future of work’ toolkit, such as Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Artificial Intelligence can be combined with RPA to achieve unprecedented levels of automation and efficiency. Every business executive should educate themselves on the capabilities of tools like RPA, with an eye toward revolutionizing their digital operations strategies of tomorrow.

Digital Insurer's Comments

Reviewing and editing this report, we’re tempted to replace ‘orchestration’ (the author’s term) with ‘implementation’, the term we practitioners have always used to describe the installation of new technologies. But 80+ pages later we’re convinced orchestration is indeed the proper term. RPA rightly done spans across traditional silos which need to act in concert with one another.

Another term we like from this report is ‘digital operations strategy.’ What is yours? What portions of your operation can you automate and why? What technical barriers exist? What, if any, moral or ethical dilemmas might you face? You should ask these questions up front. Else your RPA experiments will be perceived as one-offs, likely failing for lack of a larger vision.
