Harvey Nash CIO Survey 2014

Article Synopsis :

The digital age is here and to keep competitors at bay, insurers need unification of business under an effective digital strategy. To meet the challenges of digital transformation and a mobile-first world, digital insurers must build a consistent experience for customers across channels. To achieve these, insurers will require a skilled workforce and a digital champion.

The Digital Insurer reviews Harvey Nash’s Report on Harvey Nash CIO Survey 2014

A new role for the CIO?

The “Harvey Nash CIO Survey 2014” highlights a clear concern over ths shortage of technology skills in the Asia Pacific region. It goes on to stress that skills will have to be imported from other regions such as Australasia and Europe to meet demand. Key points discussed in the report are:

  • CIOs are becoming more important to their organisations
  • Good project performance remains an important ingredient for CIO success
  • The skills shortage problem is back on the agenda
  • Relationships remain a challenge, particularly with the marketing and HR functions
  • Digital leaders, who are they and who owns them?
  • Budgets are increasing and so is outsourcing intent

Digital Insurer's Comments

As a result of shifting technology landscapes, insurers are experiencing a pressing need to define a new role ‘CDO’ (Chief Digital Officer) in the organisation- a hybrid of the CIO, CMO and CTO.

A CDO is a relatively new type of leader that is still evolving and insurers will have to nurture them within the organisation. Executed correctly, having the right CDO in an organisation will better satisfy the growing needs of hybrid digital customers in the future. The primary role of the CDO would be to:

  1. Devise and implement the full range of digital strategies
  2. Drive change across the enterprise
  3. Use Social Media tools for enhancing customer experience
  4. Implement Big Data and analytics for better customer insight
  5. Implement the mobile strategy
