About this event
On March 19th and 20th 2019, the Global Insurtech Roadshow (GIR19), one of the world’s premiere startup events focused on early stage InsurTechs, will return for a second edition to Frankfurt. Along with a new anchor partner, Frankfurt-based TechQuartier, the two-day program will feature numerous conferences and panel discussions, an international pitch competition, workshops, and networking events for industry insiders and disruptors. Furthermore, the partner country focus will be on Israel.
Uli Kleber, the Digital Insurer’s News Correspondent for Germany will be joining #GIR2019 to report from the event.
While gearing up for #gir2019, our news correspondent Uli Kleber had the opportunity to connect with Dr. Moritz Finkelnburg, the Academic Director Insurance for Goethe Business School and organizer of the Global Insuretech Roadshow 2019 as well as Kobi Bendelak, the CEO of InsurTech Israel, to get some first hand insights on what to expect for the event.
1. What will be the highlights of #gir2019?
Moritz: We have Israel as official guest-country of our Roadshow, which is – after Singapore in 2018 – another highlight. They will compete with 8 exciting InsurTechs in our pitch and provide deep insights into their vibrant digital ecosystems. Kobi Bendelak, Founder of InsurTech Israel and Dr. Moshe Bareket, General Manager of the Israel Insurance Authority are prominent members of the delegation. Additionally, we will see some 20 young early-stagers from over 10 countries in our pitch competition, followed by some fascinating expert panels on day 2, highlighting the latest trends in Cyber, Blockchain and AI. Philipp Krohn, chief insurance journalist at Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung will moderate a panel with the executive directors of German BaFin as well as Israel’s and Macedonia’s Insurance Authorities. A very special workshop about digital strategies for smaller and medium-sized insurance companies will close the event.
2. Why did you partner with Israel as this year’s country focus?
Moritz: It’s a tradition of our Roadshow not only to focus on early-stage InsurTechs but also to have a very special guest country or region. Last year we were highlighting Singapore and Asian developments, this year we chose Israel, which is – in my eyes – a real melting pot for tech-driven digital innovations and young founders. And Kobi is – of course – one of the most connected and experienced InsurTech-insiders I know. With his accelerator “InsurTech Israel” he is deeply involved in all developments and knows the market extremely well. I am incredibly thankful for his advice and support.
3. What are the top trends in the Israeli InsurTech scene for 2019?
Kobi: The Israeli InsurTech ecosystem operates, as the entire world, in a very wide range of activities. The two most prominent areas are cyber activities and cyber insurance. Israel is known worldwide as a cybernation, and hence, the knowledge and capabilities of the entrepreneurs who guide them to applications from the field of cyber insurance, such as underwriting risk assessments, etc. Another important area of activity is artificial intelligence. Israel has large development centers of international technology companies that enjoy the wealth of knowledge from Israel in this field. Since the world of insurance is a very large consumer of artificial intelligence, many entrepreneurs are working to transfer artificial intelligence applications into the InsurTech world. So, they combine great knowledge from their field and apply them to the specifics of the insurance world (underwriting, claims, sales, frauds).
4. What do you expect to get out of your participation at #gir2019 in Frankfurt?
Kobi: Our goal is to expose the technological capabilities that exist in Israel to the European insurance ecosystem, the excellent technology that leads the industry, and to create a significant connection between the European insurance ecosystem and the Israeli InsurTech ecosystem.
