Humana and Validic partner to boost wellness through wearables

In View Summary

Humana Inc, a wellness company, and Validic, a health data solution provider, have teamed up to boost device connectivity and the use of data in Humana’s Go365 wellness and rewards program. Launched in 2017, Humana’s program helps members track healthy habits and activities, including obtaining recommended wellness check-ups, immunizations and screenings. The members can choose their level of engagement and participate in personalized activities tailored to their specific health needs and interests. It further educates its users in changing their lifestyles and behaviours in order to reduce the risk of chronic conditions and rewards them for good behaviours.

The partnership helps Humana’s Medicare and Medicaid members to connect their wearables, health apps and in-home medical devices, such as blood glucose monitors, to Humana’s wellness and rewards program. With Validic’s support Humana plans to expand the devices and data points available in Go365 to address health barriers such as nutrition, smoking cessation and mental health.

This empowers members to bring their own wearable device and enables more users to participate, irrespective of technology preference, tech savvy or ability to afford a high-end device. The solution is inclusive of all kinds of people from different socio-economic backgrounds or health challenges.

The collaboration comes at a time when rising healthcare costs are a concern and is aimed at improving quality of life for its users.

Humana and Validic jointly leverage personal health data to drive value

Drew Shiller, CEO, Validic, said: “The collaboration is about focusing resources on populations that require more attention and giving support to individuals that need a continuous partner in their health. The work between Humana and Validic is about empowering people with the tools and freedom to live better and healthier lives.”

The Digital Insurer's View

Use of wearable devices in the healthcare industry is not new, for example Cardiogram’s insurance program. Having said that, customer engagement is still lower than it could, partly due to accessibility, compatibility issues and affordability.

Humana and Validic’s partnership looks like a good collaboration that allows its users to bring their own devices, which tackles the compatibility and affordability issues. The initiative also rewards its members and allows for personalized health plans.
