WeChat, developed by Tencent, is on the face of it a Chinese messaging, social media, and mobile payment app, similar in some ways to the more basic WhatsApp. In reality it is a multi-purpose ‘super app’ that plays a fundamental role in Chinese people’s ecommerce lives, dominates online marketing, and has a wide range of functions including its developing role at the heart of the Chinese online insurance ecosystem.
