As the Internet-of-Things (IoT) is gradually becoming more mainstream, we are witnessing the alignment of insurance products and “smart” homes. In 2013, BNP Paribas Cardif in Italy launched an innovative Internet-of-Things based insurance offering called ,Habit@t, a new generation home insurance product that uses digital technology to secure customers’ homes.
Habit@t is the first home insurance policy to be “seen first-hand” thanks to Homebox, a telematics system which protects and monitors the house even when the customer is out. The innovative device watches the house through various sensors and in case of danger such as fire, smoke, flooding or lack of electricity, promptly launches an alarm both to the customer and to the operations centre, which then immediately activates the assistance service. The policy is therefore, more than just financial compensation, and also focuses on prevention and customer assistance, which includes labour and the supply of spare parts for repair in the case of a call out.
BNP Paribas Cardif designed Habit@t in association with FollowAnalytics, a San Francisco-based enterprise mobile customer engagement start-up. According to the BNP Paribas Cardif Team, these types of offers will redefine customer relationships with insurance providers in the emerging digital landscape where the insurer’s role will no longer simply be to assist customers after the incident and is much more preemptive and preventative.
