With innovation pervading the entire value chain, traditional players such as Allianz are embracing smaller, nimbler startups as opposed to withdrawing into their currently dominant positions. It’s important not to view the current movement in the insurance industry as startups v incumbents. Rather, InsurTechs are those that are motivated to embrace a risky path based on innovation, while established insurers play a vital role in supporting InsurTechs that prove their models and/or technology. When seen in isolation, InsurTechs are one of the biggest threats to the incumbents, however, as strategic partners they could prove to be indispensable enablers. Although, InsurTechs have not yet made deep inroads into the sector, corporate venture arms such as Allianz Ventures are racing to spot the winners early, thus giving them an edge as technological shifts such as AI and blockchain begin to grip the industry.
