InsurTech Valuations
Editorial by Hugh Terry
In this edition of China in Focus, in partnership with iptiQ by Swiss Re, we take an in-depth look at the current state of InsurTech valuations globally, and with a particular focus on China.
Share prices of tech companies have fallen on average by more than 50% since the start of 2022. While the gloom across financial and investment markets is being driven by a number of macro factors, including rising interest rates, as well as a general risk-off mentality among investors, we highlight in this edition how more subtle factors are at play in the InsurTech sector, and a path to recovery is beginning to reveal itself.
- Our in-depth article asks, what is holding back an InsurTech investment recovery? With tens of millions of dollars wiped from the value of previously buoyant companies, what is needed to reignite the InsurTech market?
- Giving another perspective, in interview we speak with industry insider Dominique Roudaut, who gives a venture capital view from Silicon Valley on what makes a good InsurTech investment, and what he considers potential red flags.
- Our InsurTech analysis this month looks at ZhongAn, China’s first online-only insurer. Founded in 2013, its IPO in 2017 raised USD 1.5 billion, and it now boasts more than 500 million users. When ZhongAn initially listed on the HKSE in September 2017 it did so at an IPO price of HK$59.70. In September 2022 it traded back near its all time low of around HK$18.
- And now available on-demand, join us alongside Dominique and other industry experts, as our webinar investigates the latest trends in InsurTech investment and valuations. What is causing the mismatch between insurance company and VC valuations of InsurTechs, and how should InsurTechs be valued from a business model perspective, and by insurers, from a partnership perspective? Watch here.
As always, enjoy the edition!
