An invitation, and offer, to invest in people to help them and their insurers take full advantage of technology in this digital age

I am asking for 5 minutes of your time to read this article so you can consider how to help your teams take full advantage of the opportunities technology brings to the insurance industry. If you are on the leadership team of an insurance company you should read this article, and if relevant, share with your colleagues.

This short article is structured into 3 sections: 1) gives you a quick reminder of why investing in digital skills for yourself and your teams is so important, 2) discusses what good looks like on Learning & Development (L&D) in digital insurance and 3) gives you a high-level overview of TDI Academy programmes. So let’s get to it ….

1 . Why is investment in digital skills a “no brainer”?

Stating the obvious – successful digital innovation requires talent – and lots of it across all of your organisation. It is a team game and whilst a great tech stack combined with people with deep tech skills is necessary for success – it is not, and never will be, sufficient.

Leading insurers will invest in lifelong learning to keep their people updated on digital insights of relevance to the industry and foster a culture of inclusion so that all can participant effectively in this digital age.  And guess what?  By doing this you will move the needle on performance and create a virtuous cycle where you can attract and retain better talent than others.

I hope you agree advocating more investment in L&D on digital skills for all in your organisation is not controversial. So let’s move to the how – and specifically how you introduce learning and insights on the broader, and more ”transversal” topic of the impact of digital on the insurance industry. This is more difficult than the acquisition of narrow technical skills (which are generally well served from multiple training companies).

2. What does good look like for a modern learning approach on digital insurance?

It would not surprise me if you have had negative experiences of learning – boring classroom sessions or tedious “click here” type online learning. Often the learning also suffers from a lack of relevancy – where are the use cases and insights of relevance to the insurance industry?

However, technology has allowed a new modern approach to learning that brings together informal and formal learning into a platform-based approach that is “digital first” but not “digital only” (no one wants the low completion rates that the digital only platform offer).

These modern learning platforms can bring videos, quizzes, virtual discussion groups and social learning communities to create interesting, informative learning experiences with insights from subject matter experts from anywhere in the world. This ability to bring insights from around the world is probably the single most important success factor for L&D on digital insurance – providing case studies and examples that your teams can think about and decide on relevancy and impact to your organisation. And the great news is that doing this on a modern platform can be surprisingly cost effective.
